Why does it seem so hard for automotive technicians to make at descent living?

I have always wanted to be a automotive technician someday but I have gotten mixed opinions about having this profession. Sometimes I heard that some technicians can earn over $100,000 a year but some people say they cant even earn bread money. How much would an ASE certified technician make with at least 20 years in the buisness?
