Weird but true- Why do otherwise rational individuals forego reason in a Political debate?

Ignore cause and effect, generate false opinions and beliefs, adhere to propaganda no matter how irrational and unproven- i.e., 'trickle down', anything with the appellation of 'peace keeper;, etc? !984 ain't got nothin' on our current battleground of ideological differences.
