Question on my windows media player?

i have windows vista.NOW have a error come up when trying to download a file.cannot play the file the file is either corrupt or the player doe sent support the format .or the wrong codex used.you must have seen this error.how do i fix it as the file will play in VLC.player.is there a software ai can download from windows.
